This 1970s Denby Arabesque catalogue shows off the intriguing shapes of Denby Arabesque to great effect – and what a diverse collection it is. Even in two-tone, the pattern is incredibly striking.

A standout collection of hand-decorated tableware from the 1960s, Denby Arabesque is one of Denby’s most recognised patterns. Denby designer Gill Pemberton took inspiration from a trip to Russia to create this unique pattern, choosing exotic red and gold decoration to offset its dark brown semi-matt glaze.

Prior to Arabesque, Gill had created Chevron for Denby – a collection for which she modelled all 70 pieces herself, and which set a challenge for the pottery throwers to produce thanks to its vertical sides. The proportions of handles and spouts needed to be ergonomically correct for balance, and the same ergonomically correct handles also became an important feature of Arabesque.

From 1970 - It’s Arabesque. Colourful Arabesque. Modern Arabesque. Beautiful Arabesque. Practical Arabesque. Your Arabesque. And today it's also Vintage Arabesque. Classic Arabesque. Retro Arabesque. Always Your Arabesque.

Since Denby stopped producing Arabesque in 1984 it has become highly popular among Denby Pottery collectors. Part of Denby’s charm from the Arabesque period is that every item was hand-decorated, creating a feeling of uniqueness for customers. So when it comes to adding to a collection or replacing a broken item, careful attention needs to be paid if you are to achieve a close match in both colour and design.
