  • About Gypsy

Produced from 1971 to 1984, Denby Gypsy is one of the most recognisable and beloved tableware ranges of the 1970s. Designed by Glyn Pemberton with contributions from Trish Seal, Gypsy successfully harmonised traditional and modern design elements. The soft, rounded forms of the pottery are complemented by a large, hand-painted wild rose in dusky pink, accented with subtle foliage. Originally conceived as a more elaborate scene — including a butterfly and a tree — the final design was simplified to meet production constraints, yet retained an undeniable romantic charm.

Despite Denby’s strong stoneware body, which typically resisted delicate decoration, Gypsy proved to be the exception that delighted collectors and buyers alike. It was widely praised for its aesthetic and practical appeal, and in 1977, it was featured in the Design Centre Tableware Buyers Guide as an example of excellence in contemporary design.

Gypsy was handcrafted over many years at Denby, and so there are often variations in the depth and intensity of the colours and the shape of the flowers. These variations would have been there from the day they were made and are part of the story of the design and the Denby brand. If you are looking to match the colours very closely to your existing set, then please give us a call.
