We’re celebrating the ‘Denby blues’ in this article, highlighting both the new 2024 Denby Kiln Blue collection and the ever-popular Denby Blue Dawn pattern, launched 40 years ago in 1984.

Beautiful in its own right, Denby Blue Dawn evolved from the very successful, albeit less colourful, Denby Daybreak, which came out the year before (1983) and established a trend of tableware with a more rounded shape – marketed as the ‘Sherwood Collection’. In the case of Daybreak, this shape and pattern combination showcased subtle white floral transfer prints.

Blue Dawn continued the white floral theme, this time off a soft blue hue, and both collections remain popular today. Our customers regularly purchase replacement pieces from both patterns, delighted to be able to replace a broken item or add something new, such as a sugar bowl or pepper pot. Tonally similar and both featuring the brown edge trim, Daybreak and Blue Dawn complement each other so well.

Forty years on and we’re seeing another move from neutral to blue, this time with the Kiln pattern.

Denby Kiln launched in 2022, featuring soft colourways that promote ease and practicality. Now, two years on, Denby has introduced a touch of blue in the form of Denby Kiln Blue. This captivating new inky blue pattern is complemented by a unique hand-applied gentle ombre glaze, to create subtle colour variation.

Just as the more colourful Blue Dawn built on the successful neutral tones of Daybreak all those years ago, the richer Kiln Blue – with its serene tones of the natural world – follows the popular textures and glazes of original Denby Kiln. This not only creates a more expansive overall offering but also makes it easy to mix and match, both within Kiln and with other popular Denby blue-themed patterns, including Denby Blue Dawn and Denby Imperial Blue.

Having ‘the blues’ isn’t typically something to celebrate – but having ‘the Denby blues’ certainly is! Browse all Denby collections here, and you’ll see plenty of blue themes to choose from, whether for an entire new collection or a bright and beautiful accent piece.
