The year 1972 wasn’t just any old year – it was a leap year, the longest ever, with two leap seconds added during its 366 days. Whether those extra two seconds had anything to do with Royal Doulton introducing some truly memorable collections that year, we’ll never know. But 50 years later, patterns from 1972 are still very much sought after and look as attractive as ever on today’s dining tables.

A clear trend from that year can be seen across many patterns. Think crisp white fine bone china with a bold colour border, often accented with gold or platinum detailing. Although many patterns were discontinued in the early 2000s after 30 years of manufacture, they are still admired for adding a touch of luxury, remaining popular today and often difficult to buy.

Royal Doulton Sherbrooke

Royal Doulton Sherbrooke is one of these much-in-demand collections from that time. This bold pattern features a midnight blue border with a floral design accented by a luxurious platinum trim. Our stocks include many items of tableware, including dinner and cake plates, bowls and platters, along with teacups and saucers and coffee/espresso cans.

Royal Doulton Carlyle

Another of the most recognised Royal Doulton patterns from the 1970s – one that simply oozes luxury – is Carlyle, with its blue and teal border featuring a gold trim floral pattern. It’s such a statement pattern that just a few key pieces, perhaps the oval platter or gateau plate, will add elegance to classic white tableware.

Royal Doulton Sarabande - H5023

For finer detailing, we love Royal Doulton Sarabande. Its slim black and platinum edge detail with inner circle trim on the plates and rimmed bowls creates a crisp look and a high-end finish. Our stocks are good across the collection and, as with all our replacement china, we’re always happy to search for an item we don’t have using our Free Search Service. Just ask us.

The year 1972 was a special one for Royal Doulton patterns and we love being able to showcase and supply such stunning tableware.
