Regular readers of our blog will know how we love to mix ‘old and new’, showcasing how pre-loved items from our replacement china stocks complement recently launched collections.

This time around, we’re pairing up Denby Kiln – new for 2022 – and Denby Ode. Both ranges have Denby design at their heart, with shapes, patterns and glazes conceived, created and produced in Derbyshire.

Denby Ode

Denby Ode (1967 to 1978) was the creative output of two well-known ceramic designers: Kenneth Clark created the shapes, with Glyn Colledge responsible for the glaze and pattern. Ode’s satin-matt mustard glaze, which Denby refers to as ‘Antique Gold’, is enhanced on the plates through accents of a Greek key design in white.

With Denby Ode last produced 45 years ago, it can be difficult to locate replacement items in good condition. If you’re inspired to replace a damaged piece from your Ode collection or mix it with an existing collection – perhaps Denby Kiln.

Denby Kiln

It’s easy to see how contemporary Kiln celebrates the craftmanship behind Denby. With its chalky white, oatmeal and grey colour combination, simple shapes and unique textures, Denby Kiln has a tactile feel that exudes quality and showcases the expertise of the artisans who craft each piece.

This is a special pattern with an interesting story to tell. With no two pieces the same, Kiln’s inherent handmade quality is thanks to expert craftspeople in Derbyshire. Even with such heritage, Denby continues to develop intriguing new techniques seen with Kiln: unique mugs dipped twice to create a calming ebb and flow effect; plates and bowls individually sprayed with a blue glaze to allow artisans to control the freckling.

Visually, these collections complement each other, with key pieces in Denby Ode adding a bolder accent to Denby Kiln’s natural appearance. They’re both proudly created in Derbyshire – and we think they’re destined to meet up and sit side by side on a dining table.
