Royal Crown Derby Mikado

Royal Crown Derby Mikado

The Mikado collection was inspired by a design first produced in 1894 and recorded in Royal Crown Derby’s ninth pattern book. The original Mikado pattern was designed by art director Thomas Amos Reed, who was inspired by rice paper drawings created in the Far East. His illustrations were translated into a series of intricate scenes telling tales. The legends associated with the pattern differ and include romantic stories such as the ‘Wandering sad-eyed lover’, Tall standing pagodas of the Orient’ and ‘Flights of cranes’.

Re-designed by Royal Crown Derby, the Mikado collection is a bright and contemporary take on the distinctive pattern. Working with the same romantic scenes, each piece beautifully tells the different chapters of the best loved Mikado Opera story with breath-taking detail and reinvigorated design through the stunning pops of colour. The result is directional pieces of ware with remarkable legacy at its heart. Hand crafted for you it can have a longer lead time.
