Magic City Salad/Dessert Plate by Portmeirion. This style of pottery will have developed crazing (fine lines in the glaze) since its production in the 1960s, but its striking design still makes it very collectable. To understand how crazing forms see our essential guide.

From 1966, Magic City, is such an iconic design it is included in the ceramics collection at the V&A museum. As with many of Susan Williams-Ellis designs in the late 1960s, it was on the Serif shape, which was an evolution of the successful cylinder theme which had dominated the early ranges.

Much of the pottery from this era, including Magic City, has crazed over time.
